Victory Baptist Cross

The cross at Victory Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia was erected on Friday, July 29, 2005. A person might wonder and ask: "why would a church build such a landmark?" The answer is a simple one: to remind people that Christ died for our sins on the cross. Pastor Austin Cook said, "You can’t look at it without being reminded that he died for our sins 2,000 years ago."
The foundation for the cross was dedicated on Sunday, August 14, 2005 in memory of young Adyson Grace Meade (1998 - 2005), a church member who died in a car accident in April 2005. Adyson’s parents turned the lights on in honor of their daughter during the dedication ceremony.
The cross is 100 feet tall and 60 feet wide. The cross weighs 18 tons. The foundation is 13 feet deep and has 58 ½ yards of concrete in the foundation. The cross has a skeletal framework wrapped with a white skin made of baked enamel metal panels.
James Potter of Scott County, Tennessee, designed the cross. Mr. Potter is a retired minister who has taken on building these crosses along major highways as his ministry. The cross at Victory Baptist is his fourth since 2000 and is located in Bristol, Virginia at exit five along Interstate 81.
The church hopes this cross will be a blessing to people as they travel up and down Interstate 81 and be reminded that the way of the cross leads home.
